The series tells the history of the reign of the Roman Emperor Vespasian (Anthony Hopkins), who became emperor after a bloody turmoil. As Vespasian grows older, he has to face the contempt of the upper-class aristocratic elites in Rome on the one hand, and guard against their attempts to replace him on the other.
